What are the trends in the rubber market?

One of the most noticeable trends in the rubber market is the green trend. It shows in the need for working closed loops across the entire materials chain. The aim is to make products more environmentally friendly, protect resources and reduce waste.

One example of this approach is the Synthos Group, the second largest producer in the global synthetic rubber market. The group has adopted a sustainability strategy which includes, among other things, cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 28% by 2030 and phasing out coal completely by 2028. In addition, over the last decade the company has spent 7 m a year on research and development in rubber. This work has produced styrene-butadiene rubber used to make technologically advanced tyres with low rolling resistance, which reduce fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.

A further sign of the green trend in the rubber market is the work of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and Farmed Materials from Ohio. The two companies will work together to create a source of natural rubber from a particular species of dandelion (the kok-saghyz dandelion). This plant is an excellent alternative to the rubber tree, which needs seven years to produce latex, whereas the dandelion can be harvested as often as every six months. It is also more resilient than the rubber tree and can grow in a more temperate climate. For now, this production is at the testing stage, but specialists see potential for using it in all types of tyres.
